Our Story

A Family Business, Built to Last

Arrow Fence didn't start in a boardroom. It started with a young man who grew up around fencing, spent a summer on Cape Cod building it, and decided to make it his life's work. Over 46 years later, the family is still here — same workshop, same values, same commitment to doing the job right.

How It Started

From Cape Cod Summers to 46 Years on Route 66

Arrow Fence didn't start with a business plan. It started with a family, a trade learned by hand, and the decision to build something that would last.

1960s–70s
Fencing Runs in the Family
Stephen Howard grew up watching his father build fences for Anchor Fence, one of the region's established contractors. The trade was in the family long before Arrow Fence existed. When Stephen headed to Cape Cod for a summer during college, he took a job installing fence. It wasn't a career plan at the time. It was just a good summer gig. But the work stuck with him.

A Brief Detour into Teaching
After graduating from Central Connecticut State University, Stephen went into teaching at a private high school in Connecticut. It was there that he met Maura, who would become his wife and business partner. After two years in the classroom, Stephen realized teaching wasn't the right fit. He knew what he wanted to build, and it wasn't lesson plans.

Arrow Fence Is Born
Stephen founded Arrow Fence, Inc. on March 1, 1979, starting the business in South Windsor, Connecticut. His father — the man who'd spent his career at Anchor Fence — came to work for him. Maura worked alongside them while raising the family. It was a true family operation from day one, built on the knowledge of four generations of fence builders.

Building a Permanent Home
After about eight years in South Windsor, Stephen and Maura made the decision to build their own facility. They found a spot on Route 66 in East Hampton and broke ground on what would become the permanent headquarters of Arrow Fence. The kids were there for the construction, quite literally growing up inside the walls of the business.

A Family Grows Up in the Shop
The Howard children grew up on the job site and in the workshop. They weren't just the owner's kids. They were part of the operation, learning the trade the same way Stephen learned it from his father. The building rose around them, and so did the business.

Today
The Next Generation Takes the Lead
Today, Arrow Fence is led by Stephen Howard and the family, carrying forward the same values Stephen built the company on. The Route 66 workshop is still the heart of everything. Every fence is still custom-built in-house by their own crew. No subcontractors, no shortcuts, no compromises. Four generations of knowledge, one family name on every job.

The Arrow Difference

Every Fence, Built by Our Own Hands

In an industry where most companies hire subcontractors to do the actual work, Arrow Fence does something different. We employ our own craftsmen. Every fence we build is fabricated in our Route 66 workshop and installed by the same team that built it. There is no hand-off, no middleman, no mystery crew showing up on your property.

This isn't just a policy. It's the reason we've been in business for 46 years. When you control every step — from selecting the lumber to setting the last post — you control the quality. And that's something we refuse to give up.

  • Custom fabrication in our East Hampton workshop
  • All W-2 employees, no subcontractors
  • Same crew builds it and installs it
  • Direct accountability on every job
  • Materials you can inspect at our showroom before you commit

More Than a Contractor

Part of the Community

Over 46 years, Arrow Fence has become more than a fencing company. We've been trusted with some of the most sensitive and important projects in the region — the kind of work that only goes to a company with a proven, unshakable reputation.

Tartia Cemetery Restoration

In 2013, the East Hampton Cemetery Board selected Arrow Fence to restore the fencing and entrance gate at the historic Tartia Cemetery, a site dating back to 1777 that holds the town's founding families. When you're trusted with the grounds where the founders of your community rest, that says everything about your reputation.

Municipal Partnerships

Arrow Fence has worked alongside town boards and public works departments on projects across the region, including civic fencing and landscaping initiatives in Salem, CT. We've donated time, materials, and discounts to improve the communities we serve.

The Contractor You Call to Fix It

When other contractors abandon jobs or leave homeowners with damaged fences, people call Arrow Fence to make it right. We've built a reputation as the company that comes in after things go wrong — not because we caused the problem, but because we're the ones who can fix it.
